Deb's Winter Wonderland

I had Deb's name this year for our Priceless Christmas quilt swap. I hand embroidered this "Winter Wonderland" quilt. I can't wait to start one for me now. This is what I spent much of my summer doing but I couldn't show it.

Squished Pineapple - two of them

This quilt was made for Cody and Becky's wedding. The pattern is not mine, but the way I pieced it was my own invention. It is done with strip piecing -- not paper piecing -- and the use of one template in the center following by a series of cuts done with a square ruler.

I made another one for Andy and Kelly's wedding. Theirs was burgandy and green.

I would so love to make it again; however, it takes 9 yards of just the background fabric -- around 18 yards total. It would cost $170 just to make the top at today's prices.

Cracker Jacks - Faye Torgerson

The bottom photo is called Cracker Jacks and was designed by Kaye Evans. I gave it to Faye Torgerson for my Christmas wallhanging exchange. I loved Kaye's class so much that I took it twice, first at Ruby's Inn and later at my last Annual Meeting.

Jesus and Mary - Lorna

My trapunto plan really didn't work out with this project, so I outlined the picture in decorative thread. I gave it to Lorna for Christmas.

3-D Kaleidoscope - Linda Johnson

This top was made in March or April of 2005 at a retreat in Park City. Theresa, Deb, and I went together and I designed and sewed this while we were there along with my Kaleidoscope (Bali Passion Mystery) quilt made from Batiks. The pattern itself was not my design, but the folded insert idea was. I peeled back the insert pieces and stitched them down as I quilted it.

I quilted it that year and gave it to Linda Johnson for our Christmas wallhanging swap.

Halloween quilts for the kids

I did get my kids Halloween quilts completed before (ON) Halloween. I really love the way they turned out. This one is Justin's. I didn't quilt much in it -- didn't think it needed it.

This one is Jessi's. The witch in the center was fused by Deb several years ago. We took a mystery class from Charlene Richens, a good quilting friend, SEVERAL years ago at Annual Meeting in SLC. I LOVE the witch, but Deb wasn't too excited about her. I think she is perfect in the middle of the quilt.

When Jim came upstairs in the morning I told him, "I left this quilt out for one night and some spider made webs all over it." I had him going for a minute.

Double Wedding Ring - Esther

I made a queen sized double wedding ring quilt for Esther Chestshire in trade for piano lessons. I am shown below holding up part of it -- it's the only photo of the quilt I have. I gave this to Esther in December of 2005. She intended to give it to her mother for Christmas.
I pieced the top and bound it. Hazel McMullin quilted it on her longarm.

Mary and Jesus - Mom

This was made in Dec of 2007.

You will have to click in close to see it on the wall. I didn't ever photograph it for me, but noticed it was in this pic.

The story: my very first year at annual meeting I took a reverse applique class in which we made this Mary and Jesus pattern. I loved it so much that I made one for me and one for a friend - Esther - in trade for piano lessons for my daughters. I also felt that it would be a nice gift for my Mom and Mother-in-law, so I made one for each of them. I really wanted to do it in trapunto - something I'd had limited experience with. I did Lorna's first (can't find a photo) and felt it didn't puff very well because I didn't get the puffs in quite the right places, so I stitches around the puffed areas in a beautiful metalic thread to help highlight the figures. I changed my pattern a little and ended up with this one for Mom.

I also wanted to mention that while making this quilt, I took it on a trip to Vegas where Jim had to drive the bus for the Carbon wrestling team. We took the whole family and had a great time. I used the time on the bus to snip out all the excess batting and even took my machine and quilted it in the motel room.

Monsters - Justin

I also completed this monster quilt in the fall of 2007. My friends first discovered this darling pattern from a state round robin that went around -- we just had to make it. A few months after completing the round robin, some friends and I got together to cut out these babies and fuse them. I cannot belive how much time it took to machine stitch around all the pieces! Anyway, I finally got the blocks out in 2007, sashed them, and wala -- MONSTERS FOR JUSTIN.

He loved to place it on his bed upside down so he could look at the monsters while the quilt covered him in his bed. I think he really liked it.

My favorite part was the quilting in the border. I quilted monsters of all sorts in it.

Race Car Stack N Wack - Justin

This was made in late fall of 2007 for Justin. It is a stack-n-wack with borders around each block. Hazel taught me how to do the borders and I think they really improve the look of the quilt.

Yes, I was pretty hooked on stack-n-wack in those days! It is still fun.

2009 Stars Over the Horizon - Jessi

I made the top for this quilt several years ago while I still lived in Helper. I finally quilted it yeah!! I always called this twin quilt the "peacock quilt" because it is done in peacock colors, but the magazine I got the pattern out of calls it "Stars Over the Horizon".

Scrap Bag Triangles - Jolynn

I pieced this top in my very early quilting days almost entirely out of a bag of scraps someone gave me. I was pretty poor back then and thrilled to have a "free" project. Some of the fabric pieces are pretty old looking; but I love it. I just love scrappy, old looking quilts!

I found two quilt blocks in magazines and made this quilt out of them by alternating them. They are all half square triangles. Such intricate piecing is not really for a beginner, but I think it made up nice anyway.

Justin's Christmas Log Cabin

This is Justin's Christmas quilt. It is log cabin blocks. Lorna, my mother-in-law, had made this pattern into a baby quilt. I fell in love! She was headed up state to buy fabric one day and I gave her some money and told her to get me the Christmas fabric for this quilt. I didn't pick out any of it. I love the quilt and cherish the memory of her picking it out for me.

You will want to click in closer to really see the logs.

Birdhouse RR from Ruby's - Jolynn

These birdhouses were from a round robin I joined at Ruby's Inn in Bryce Canyon. Kaye Evans was the host. We agreed to join the group at Ruby's in February and brought them completed to Annual Meeting in September of the same year. My blocks are the pink and green ones that are coordinating fabrics. This was easy and fun. I added the applique birds to add some focal points. This one goes out to Jolynn.

Christmas Stack n Wack - Jessi

This is the whole quilt. I'm not real happy with the way I quilted it, but it is done.

This is a close up of a block from Jessi's Christmas Quilt. It was my first ever stack-n-wack from several years ago.
